About this book
A search for a missing sister becomes a journey through loss, displacement, and the possibility of renewal in The Ghosts of Okuma: A Love Story by Mitch Wieland.
Wyatt Roth is a sixteen-year-old struggling with the disappearance of his older sister and the suicide of his mother. His father, Stewart, has withdrawn from the outside world, spending his days searching online for clues about his missing daughter. When Wyatt discovers that his sister may be working as a model in Tokyo, father and son travel to Japan in the hope of finding her.
Their plans unravel when Stewart suffers a severe panic attack in a crowded Tokyo railway station. Left to continue the search on his own, Wyatt encounters Yoshimi Watanabe, a spirited young woman displaced by the Fukushima nuclear disaster. Through her, he discovers a city shaped by restless energy and a region marked by the consequences of catastrophe.
As Wyatt and Yoshimi grow closer, their journey takes them beyond Tokyo and into the abandoned communities of the Fukushima exclusion zone. Their experiences bring together two different forms of loss: the intimate pain of a fractured family and the wider trauma of people forced from their homes.
Wieland's novel explores grief, family bonds, displacement, injustice, courage, and the difficult work of imagining a future after profound upheaval. Its combination of coming-of-age storytelling, cross-cultural connection, and contemporary Japanese settings makes it suitable for readers of literary fiction and emotionally layered stories about resilience and belonging.
